Tips to dress your baby this winter!

Thinking of how to dress your baby snugly for the winter? Being mum we know how tricky it can be! And we moms have a tendency to overdo it (actually everything). Keep in mind one mantra that if you’re cold, the possibilities are your baby is cold too, and if you’re hot, well, you get the drill. Here are some tips on how to dress that little snowball of yours within the "just right" spot between too hot and too cold.
  1. Layers please!
Instead of using one thick jacket, use layers. It not solely helps to trap heat but you can add or remove as needed. Never use wool as a base layer, it may hurt your baby’s sensitive skin. Soft cotton garments work well as a base layer.
  1. A plus one for your little one! (Don’t take it literally, moms 😊)
A good guiding principal is to dress your little one as you are dressed and then add an extra layer to it. This way you can ensure baby is not over layered.
  1. Cozy nights!
If your baby is co-sleeping, then they don’t need many layers. She’s benefitting from the warmth of your body. And if your baby sleeps in a crib, a bodysuit with footed PJs is the best. You can layer up with a cotton sleep sack. If you want to make sure he's not too sweaty, check his neck.
  1. Cover up.
Don’t forget to cover your baby from top to toe. If you need gloves, hat and thick socks means your baby need it too. A cozy hat that covers the ears and has a chin strap is a smart choice. Tug mittens over your baby's hands too keep them warm.
  1. Don’t forget that blanket.
If you’re headed out in the stroller, make sure to use a blanket as an added layer to keep in some heat. Instead of a blanket you can also use stroller’s rain cover as an extra layer.
  1. Unbundle your bundle of joy!
Babies dressed in too many layers are at a greater risk of overheating and SIDS. So, if you have been out, make sure to remove extra layers to ensure baby is not overheating.
  1. Touch the toes!
If you are not sure, if your baby is warm enough, it is best to touch her toes and belly. Her toes should be on the cool side (not cold) and her belly should feel warm. A baby with warm toes and a warm belly is overdressed. And cool belly means your baby is not able to warm herself and needs another layer, please!

As much as your baby has trouble heating up his body, he has cooling it off too. So, make sure your baby is layered up enough to maintain his body temperature.

With love,
From two moms
